Was reizt dich an Coolanova?

Musstest du dein Set-up speziell für Coolanova umstellen?

Also möglichst viele Instrumente mitnehmen. Dann findet man schon den richtigen Sound.

Wie habt ihr aufgenommen? Du kommst ja bestimmt in einigen Studios vorbei …?

„Love is in the Air“ von John Paul Young.

Vielen Dank.

Hello Pitti – You have already participated in the second Coolanova CD. What attracts you to Coolanova?

What attracts me to Coolanova … simply: it’s a project that sounds different from the ones I’ve played and play in. It’s always interesting to play your own tunes and also the cover versions that we recorded with Coolanova, because they are always totally surprising, and that’s what appeals to me. That it never gets boring and has its own style.

Did you have to change your set-up specifically for Coolanova?

My percussion set-up is actually different every week, because that inspires me and of course the bands I work with. For Coolanova I had packed a few small gimmicks, instruments that you do not use that often, and it just turned out, that during the recordings there had to be some tuning on site. For example, we wrapped a pair of mallets with scarves and pompons so we got a very soft sound for a song. And other than that, of course, I had boxes of small-scale percussion instruments, and Brigitte even had a few shakers and jingles left on the tape. But that’s always the case when recording, there are new ideas and you can never really prepare. So take as many instruments as possible and then you will find the right sound.

Pitti Hecht mit RainmakerHow did you record? Surely you travel to studios …?

Yes, I get around, that’s right. I also have the great privilege of being invited to play on productions, where as a percussionist you do not necessarily think you’d play – whether it’s filming, children’s music or even big band jazz … I´ve been to extravagant studios in America and around the world, but we did it quite differently this time. We said, when do I have time, when does Brigitte have time to record, where do we do it? And then we said, OK, we do not need a lot of space, let’s just go to the cellar. We rearranged the basement a bit, so that it sounds good acoustically and then we actually did the recording in the basement at Brigitte´s home. I think it sounds awesome – and I don´t need to talk it up, it really sounds like a professional studio. That’s due to experience and we were lucky that the walls and cardboard boxes that were around made the sound perfect.

Do you also play live with Coolanova?

Of course, I also play live, because that’s the most fun. Play the music and see exactly how people react to what you do. Unfortunately, I live quite far away from Frankfurt, so I don´t play with them that often, but if time and the budget permits, then of course I like to play live gigs with Coolanova. We did some this year, that were very relaxed, and more will follow in the next few years. If any of you would like to have Coolanova as a band with you in your garden, we would also play for you.

One last question: if you could choose a song that Coolanova  should cover, what would you like to hear?

„Love is in the Air“ by John Paul Young. That’s a cool song.

Thank you for the interview!

Yes, thank you for your interest, and I hope that Coolanova will produce and perform music for many more years. And of course, I’ll also be happy when I’m able to be a part of it as a guest, because it’s a special project that is worth listening to and simply totally relaxed.

Many Thanks.
